A userspace test harness confirmed a reported Linux assoc_array defect and uncovered three additional bugs, all dating to the library’s introduction in 2013, according to Linus Torvalds. He describes the work in his signed assoc-array-fixes tag, dated October 11, 2026.
Torvalds calls it an “LLM-assisted branch.” He used the technology to make difficult code easier to understand, including splitting large functions into smaller pieces. Testing followed and produced the additional discoveries.
The source documents AI assistance with a refactor and bug discoveries through testing. It does not identify the LLM, establish that an AI system independently discovered the defects, or show that the changes had reached Linux master.
The Work Started With Code Torvalds Could Not Easily Follow
Nils Ollrogge reported the original assoc_array bug and supplied a patch, according to the tag. Torvalds had difficulty understanding the surrounding code well enough to follow the proposed fix.
He explains his decision in the tag message:
“Nils Ollrogge reported a bug in the assoc_array library and had a patch to fix it too, but that code was too obscure for me to follow, so I did what I preach: use modern LLM tools to help make sense of it all.”
The LLM-assisted work addressed a specific maintenance problem: improving the readability of an implementation Torvalds needed to evaluate. A reported defect and proposed repair already existed. His account is not a general endorsement of AI-generated kernel code.
The branch splits some larger, hard-to-read functions to make the code more readable. This reduces the amount of intertwined logic a reviewer must reason about at once.
Refactoring is intended to change how code is organized without changing what it does. In sensitive systems code, that distinction needs verification. A cleaner-looking function can still behave differently, especially when it manipulates pointers and handles unusual structural cases.
Torvalds’ account covers both making the implementation easier to inspect and exercising it with a test harness. A headline about AI finding old bugs should retain both parts.
The Commit Messages Show What “LLM-Assisted” Means
The tagged commit provides a small example of the cleanup. Its subject is assoc_array: use assoc_array_parent_link when splitting a shortcut.
