Anthropic is struggling to secure enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, according to TechCrunch’s October 20, 2026 report, which cites an S-1 filing leaked to The Wall Street Journal. The report says those suppliers increasingly see the Claude developer as a competitor, complicating relationships that Anthropic depends on to run and expand its AI business.
The reported spending figure is striking: Anthropic believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts. But that total includes deals still being negotiated. It should not be read as $750 billion already spent, a verified total of signed obligations, or proof that the corresponding infrastructure is available.
The underlying filing and original Journal report are not among the opened sources for this article. The capacity difficulties, financial figures and supplier tensions therefore remain attributed to TechCrunch’s account. Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
The $750 Billion Estimate Includes Unfinished Deals
Anthropic’s reported problem exposes a gap between purchasing intentions and usable computing capacity. A large prospective budget can describe the scale of a company’s ambitions without showing how much infrastructure it can actually access, or when.
A separate Anthropic partnership announcement involving Microsoft and NVIDIA provides a useful comparison. Anthropic says it has committed to purchase $30 billion of Azure compute capacity and to contract additional compute capacity up to one gigawatt.
Those figures describe different dimensions of the arrangements:
| Figure | What the published evidence says | What it leaves unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| More than $750 billion | TechCrunch reports potential cloud spending, including deals still in negotiation. | The finalized portion, payment schedule and delivery dates. |
| $30 billion | Anthropic publicly states an Azure compute purchase commitment. | Detailed contract terms, payment milestones and capacity availability. |
| Up to one gigawatt | Anthropic describes additional capacity contracting and an initial NVIDIA-based compute commitment at this scale. |
