TikTok wants shoppers to move from a product video to questions about sizing, shipping and availability, then purchase directly from a brand without leaving the app. Its newly announced Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct checkout target the gap between discovering something in the feed and deciding whether to buy it.
Availability remains an open question. In its October 5 announcement, TikTok describes these commerce experiences as both being introduced and being built. It does not provide a complete geographic rollout schedule or establish that every shopper or merchant can access them.
For brands, the announcement contains two distinct integration stories: commerce work with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, and advertiser MCP connectors that TikTok explicitly says are available across several AI platforms. Those claims describe different levels of readiness.
Shopping Assistant Answers the Questions Before Purchase
TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as a conversational AI agent that understands context, remembers shoppers’ needs and helps them find suitable products. The company says it provides real-time guidance on product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing, all within one conversation.
A video may spark interest without resolving the practical questions that come before checkout. Someone considering a jacket may still need to know whether their size is available and whether delivery fits their plans. In the proposed flow, they could ask follow-up questions inside TikTok instead of opening a browser or another AI tool. The announcement does not demonstrate that shoppers will make that change.
TikTok says the assistant will appear across several touchpoints, but does not identify a complete set of entry points. Its memory is also unexplained: remembering information during a conversation is different from maintaining preferences across sessions or purchases.
“Real-time” is TikTok’s description. The company does not publish an accuracy evaluation, inventory-refresh specification or explanation of how the assistant handles conflicting information. An answer about stock or delivery can influence a purchase immediately, so brands will need to know whether the conversation reliably reflects their current product and fulfillment information.
Buy Direct Brings Brand Checkout Into the Feed
Buy Direct supplies the transaction side of the proposed experience. TikTok says users can purchase directly from a brand through the For You feed, without leaving the app, with “just one click.”
