Free Gemini users would lose access to both Flash and Pro under a change that The Verge reports Google plans to introduce on October 9, 2026. Flash-Lite would become their only available model. Subscribers to the entry-level Google AI Plus plan would also lose Pro, but on a separately notified timetable.
That would change what a Gemini subscription buys. Paying would determine which models users can select, rather than simply giving them more usage of models also available for free.
There is an important qualification: in the October 8 research snapshot, Google’s public help page still showed Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro as available across every tier. The reported restrictions and the official access table therefore do not yet agree. Readers should treat this as a reported upcoming change, not proof that the restrictions are already active on their accounts.
Free Users Would Lose Two Models, While AI Plus Loses One
According to The Verge, Google’s planned access changes would create the following model lineup:
| Gemini subscription tier | Model access reported after the change | Reported timing |
|---|---|---|
| Without a paid AI plan | Flash-Lite only | Starting October 9 |
| Google AI Plus | Flash-Lite and Flash | Subscribers receive an email explaining when Pro access ends |
| Google AI Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro | No model-access reduction reported |
| Google AI Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro | No model-access reduction reported |
The distinction between the two affected groups matters. October 9 is the reported starting date for the free-tier restriction. It should not be presented as a universal deadline for AI Plus subscribers, whose effective date is supposed to be communicated by email.
For free users, the proposed change would remove both alternatives to Flash-Lite. For AI Plus subscribers, Flash would remain available, but paying for the entry-level plan would no longer secure access to the Pro model.
The naming can make this harder to follow: Gemini Pro is a model, while Google AI Pro is a subscription plan. Under the reported arrangement, users who want the Pro model would need the AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription.
