Approved companies in Anthropic’s expanded Claude for Startups program can claim one free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, plus $1,000 in first-party Claude API credits. The credits expire six months after they are granted, halfway through the free subscription year.
Organizations already using Claude Team do not qualify for the free Team offer. Bootstrapped startups can apply without venture backing.
TechCrunch reported the expansion on October 6, 2026. The package also includes partner offers, higher API rate limits, and access to Anthropic’s Applied AI office hours. Founders will need to check eligibility and claim each benefit through the Claude Console, keeping the subscription and developer credits separate.
Eligibility Uses Company Age or Recent Funding
Startups must have been founded in the last five years or funded in the last two years. Anthropic lists these as alternative eligibility criteria, so applicants do not need to satisfy both.
A recently founded, bootstrapped business can meet the stated criteria without raising money. An older company may qualify through recent funding. Anthropic explicitly says the program is open to bootstrapped, pre-seed, and venture-backed startups.
Applicants also need:
- A Claude Console account.
- A company email address matching the company website’s domain.
- A short description of what they are building.
Meeting the age or funding requirement does not guarantee acceptance. Anthropic reviews every application, and applicants must comply with its supportability policies. These criteria are the starting point for an application, not an automatic entitlement to credits.
According to the program page, most applications receive a decision within minutes. Those requiring manual review usually take two to three business days. These are Anthropic’s stated processing expectations, not a guaranteed turnaround.
Having the Console account, appropriate company email, and concise product description ready should reduce avoidable friction. It does not imply anything about how Anthropic makes its approval decisions.
The Free Team Year Is Only for New Organizations
The subscription benefit is one year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, provided the organization is new to Claude Team. Larger startups should plan around that cap; the offer does not cover an unlimited workforce.
Existing Claude Team customers are excluded from this benefit. Anthropic does not promise them a refund, a free renewal, or an equivalent subscription credit.
Companies already enrolled in Claude for Startups are in a different position. Anthropic says existing program members do not need to reapply and can redeem the expanded offers in the Console. Membership in the startup program is separate from being a Claude Team customer, so the Team restriction still determines whether the free subscription is available.
Budget the subscription and API credits separately. One supplies team access; the other is a capped allowance for first-party API usage. A year of free Team access does not extend the API credit deadline.
Apply First, Then Claim the Benefits in Console
Anthropic’s program FAQ describes an application and redemption process centered on the Claude Console. Approval and redemption are separate steps, so submitting the form is only the beginning.
The sequence is:
- Sign in to the Claude Console. Use the account associated with the startup and complete the application with the required company information.
- Wait for the decision email. Anthropic says it emails applicants when a decision is made, including applications that undergo manual review.
- Open the Claude Startups page in Console. Accepted applicants receive an email containing a link to that page.
- Claim the eligible Team offer and API credits. New-to-Team organizations can claim the subscription benefit there. Approved companies also claim their $1,000 API allocation through the startup page.
- Redeem relevant partner offers. Claude Startup Stack offers use redemption codes available in the Console.
Credits expire six months after they are granted. Anthropic does not describe the expiry as six months from the news announcement. Once the credits are granted, record the actual expiry date and plan work against it. Neither the announcement date, the application date, nor the free Team year substitutes for that deadline.
Existing startup-program members should begin by checking the Console instead of submitting another application. Anthropic says they are already eligible to redeem the expanded offers, subject to the applicable benefit conditions.
All startup benefits remain subject to the program terms, including the Additional Benefits Addendum. Acceptance does not remove the conditions attached to an individual offer.
The $1,000 Cannot Offset Bedrock or Vertex AI Bills
The API credits work only with the first-party Claude API through Claude Console. They cannot be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other third-party platforms.
For startups accessing Claude through a cloud provider, this is the most consequential restriction. The allowance cannot offset an existing Bedrock or Vertex AI bill; using it requires a workload that runs through Anthropic’s first-party service.
A team already using the first-party API can evaluate the offer against its planned usage. Teams using Claude exclusively through a cloud platform need to weigh the $1,000 allowance against the work involved in adding another API route.
The credit is a fixed budget, not unlimited inference for six months. Its usefulness depends on the workload and applicable API pricing. Founders should estimate the cost of the experiments or product traffic they intend to cover without assuming the allowance will fund a particular number of users or requests.
Members receiving credits through the program automatically get higher API rate limits, Anthropic says. The program page does not specify numerical thresholds, so the announcement alone is not enough to plan production throughput. Higher limits do not increase the dollar value of the credits, either.
The six-month expiry favors work a startup can execute soon, such as prototype testing, evaluations, or a planned first-party deployment. Without a concrete usage plan, credits can expire before the team gets much benefit from them.
Partner Offers Add Value, but They Are Not Cash
Anthropic advertises up to $45,000 in partner-offer value through the Claude Startup Stack. Independent third-party companies supply these benefits, which combine service credits, discounts, and temporary free access.
Examples listed on the program page include:
- ClickHouse: $5,000 in ClickHouse Cloud credits.
- Granola: three months of Business free for up to 10 seats.
- Gamma: 25% off the first year of a Gamma Pro annual subscription.
These offers are not interchangeable with cash or Claude API credits. A discount produces useful savings only if the startup needs the product and can redeem the offer under its applicable conditions. The advertised total is no guarantee of a corresponding reduction in operating expenses.
Selecting offers that match an existing stack or near-term plans gives founders a more realistic estimate of the savings. Adopting an unnecessary service solely for a discount can add work instead of reducing costs.
Some venture-backed companies have a separate route to more credits. Anthropic says startups backed by a VC in its partner network can obtain up to $100,000 in additional API credits, claimed through their VC. This is distinct from the standard $1,000 allocation and should not be assumed to arrive automatically with program approval.
Office Hours Give Founders a Technical Support Route
The package includes 45-minute live office hours held every other week with Anthropic’s Applied AI team, according to the program page. Accepted members receive registration links for the recurring virtual sessions by email and in the startup portal.
For a small engineering team, a focused session about a specific implementation problem may help make better use of a limited development budget. The page does not promise a dedicated support engineer or a guaranteed resolution timeline.
The strongest fit is a qualifying startup that is new to Claude Team and has first-party API work ready to run within six months. A company already paying for Team or using Claude exclusively through a cloud provider faces a narrower savings opportunity.
Before claiming, founders should identify which seats they need, which workloads can use the first-party credits, and which partner offers replace spending they would otherwise incur. That gives the package a usable budget and a work plan tied to its deadlines.
