OpenAI is offering recurring API credits to eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers, giving them a separate allowance for building applications and agents. Pro grants range from $100 to $500 per monthly billing period. Business grants depend on paid seat types, with a $500 monthly workspace cap.
The key condition is activation. Paying for an eligible subscription does not mean credits have already arrived. OpenAI’s Help Center documentation tells subscribers to complete the claim process and check the receiving API organization.
These credits also sit outside the allowances people use inside ChatGPT and signed-in Codex. The practical change is a funded API balance attached to one organization, with its own access controls, usage rules and expiration date.
How Much API Credit Each Plan Receives
OpenAI publishes the following full-period allowances. All amounts are in US dollars, and the first grant can be smaller because it is prorated.
| Eligible subscription or seat | Full-period API allowance |
|---|---|
| Pro 100, the $100 tier | $100 per monthly billing period |
| Pro 200, the $200 tier | $200 per monthly billing period |
| Pro 500, the $500 tier | $500 per monthly billing period |
| Business Standard | $20 per paid seat per month, pooled |
| Business Premium | $100 per paid seat per month, pooled |
| Business workspace maximum | $500 per monthly billing period |
| Annually prepaid Business workspace | Full-year grant upfront, capped at $6,000 per annual billing cycle |
For monthly Business workspaces, the calculation is:
Monthly allowance = the smaller of ($20 × paid Standard seats + $100 × paid Premium seats) and $500.
OpenAI gives two useful examples: five Standard seats plus three Premium seats produce a $400 allowance. Ten Standard seats plus four Premium seats produce $600 before the cap, leaving a $500 grant. Annually prepaid workspaces receive the year’s allowance in one issuance, with the first grant prorated for the remaining billing term. These amounts and conditions come from OpenAI’s benefit policy.
The cap has a straightforward consequence: 25 Standard seats or five Premium seats already reach the monthly maximum. Additional eligible seats beyond that point cannot increase the full-period grant.
I’d treat the advertised amount as a ceiling on useful API spending, not an automatic reduction in subscription cost. A $200 grant only offsets $200 of spending if the organization consumes that much covered API usage before expiration. An organization with little API demand gets less practical value.
Eligibility Requires Ownership on Both Sides
OpenAI requires an active, paid, eligible subscription that has been active for at least seven days before claiming. Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 qualify, as do eligible Business workspaces with paid Standard or Premium seats.
Plus, free trials and complimentary subscriptions do not qualify. OpenAI also says Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are not established eligible plans or seats for this offer. The detailed requirements appear in its Help Center and developer guide.
The person activating must satisfy all of these conditions:
- Pro: Own the ChatGPT subscription and the receiving API organization.
- Business: Own the ChatGPT workspace and the receiving API organization. Membership or an admin role alone is insufficient.
- Account identity: Use the same email address for the ChatGPT account and the API account used to link.
- Billing permissions: Have permission to manage the API organization’s billing. A custom billing role alone cannot replace organization ownership.
The ownership requirement is more restrictive than ordinary billing access. A Business administrator who handles subscriptions may still need the workspace owner to complete activation, and an API billing manager cannot claim solely through that role.
The documentation defines the policy; it does not confirm availability or successful issuance for any particular account. The reliable check is the activated benefit and visible credits in the intended API organization.
How to Activate Through ChatGPT or API Platform
OpenAI supports two claim paths. Both link the same subscription benefit to an API organization, so they are alternatives, not two separate grants.
Claim Through ChatGPT
- Sign in as the eligible Pro subscription owner, or select the eligible Business workspace as an owner.
- For Pro, open Settings → Billing. For Business, open the workspace’s billing settings in ChatGPT or the Admin Console.
- Find the API credits benefit and start the claim flow.
- Review the receiving API organization. If multiple eligible organizations are available, select the intended one.
- Review the displayed grant amount and confirm activation.
- Open API Platform billing settings for that organization to verify the credits.
Claim Through API Platform
- Sign in using the email associated with the eligible ChatGPT subscription.
- Select the API organization you own and want to fund.
- Open Billing and find the API credits benefit.
- Select the eligible subscription or Business workspace you own.
- Review the offer and confirm activation.
- Check that organization’s API Platform billing settings for the grant.
These paths are documented separately in OpenAI’s activation instructions.
One eligible subscription or workspace can fund one API organization, and an API organization can have only one such active link. That makes the organization-selection screen consequential. I’d check the organization used by the intended application before confirming; a grant in a different organization will not fund that application’s requests.
New API users can link a Personal API Organization using their subscription email without completing API onboarding first. Business workspace seats do not automatically give colleagues access to the linked API organization or its projects.
Expiration Follows the Subscription Billing Cycle
OpenAI prorates the first grant for the time remaining in the current paid billing period. Claiming halfway through a monthly cycle therefore does not provide the full advertised monthly allowance.
The expiration clock also follows the subscription’s existing billing cycle. It does not restart on activation. Waiting to claim can reduce both the first grant and the time available to use it.
After activation:
- Monthly credits expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle.
- Unused credits do not roll over.
- Annually prepaid Business grants expire at the end of the annual billing cycle.
- Renewal grants arrive automatically while the subscription remains eligible and the benefit remains available.
OpenAI also reserves the possibility of changing or removing the benefit. These renewal and expiration conditions are stated in its Help Center policy.
Annual Business billing changes the spending window materially. The upfront grant can support uneven usage across the annual term, while monthly grants must be consumed within their individual cycles. Neither arrangement supports carrying unused credits into the next billing cycle.

1What Happens If I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription?
Cancellation stops future grants once the subscription is no longer eligible. Credits already issued remain usable until their expiration date, according to OpenAI’s developer guide.
