OpenAI Adds Up to $500 in Monthly API Credits
Eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim API credits, but ownership, billing dates and organization linking determine how much they can use.
OpenAI now offers eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers up to 500 dollars in monthly API credits, which must be manually claimed and linked to a single API organization. These credits are not cash back but expiring usage offsets that do not roll over. Business workspaces pool credits based on seat type, capped at 500 dollars, while annual plans receive a prorated yearly grant. Because these credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, they function as a usage ceiling rather than guaranteed savings, requiring careful management to ensure they cover intended development workloads.
OpenAI is offering eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers up to $500 per month in API credits. The benefit requires activation and funds API usage in one linked organization. It does not increase ChatGPT message limits or signed-in Codex allowances.
An October 28, 2026 post in OpenAI’s Community announcements category outlined the offer. OpenAI’s Help Center and developer documentation explain the claim process, including a seven-day subscription-age requirement, prorated first grants and expiration at the end of the subscription’s billing cycle.
For subscribers already paying for API work, this could offset an existing expense. The important distinction is that these are expiring usage credits, not cash back or a transferable balance.
How Much Each Plan Receives
OpenAI lists the following full-period allowances in its Help Center documentation. All amounts are in US dollars.
Eligible subscription or seat
Full-period API allowance
ChatGPT Pro, $100 tier
$100 per monthly billing period
ChatGPT Pro, $200 tier
$200 per monthly billing period
ChatGPT Pro, $500 tier
$500 per monthly billing period
Business Standard
$20 per paid seat
Business Premium
$100 per paid seat
Business workspace maximum
$500 per monthly billing period
Business credits are pooled for the workspace. For monthly billing, the calculation is:
Monthly allowance = the smaller of ($20 × Standard seats + $100 × Premium seats) and $500.
Five Standard seats and three Premium seats produce $400 in monthly credits. Ten Standard seats and four Premium seats produce $600 before the cap, so the workspace receives a maximum of $500.
Business workspaces paying annually upfront receive the full year’s grant in one issuance, capped at $6,000 per annual billing cycle. Their first grant is prorated for the remaining paid term and expires when that annual cycle ends.
The cap matters for purchasing decisions. Once a monthly workspace reaches $500, extra seats do not increase its full-period API allowance. I would treat the credits as an offset for work you already intend to do, not as a reason by themselves to buy more seats.
Check These Requirements Before Claiming
OpenAI’s developer guide and Help Center specify several conditions:
The subscription must be active, paid and at least seven days old. Free trials and complimentary subscriptions do not qualify.
You must own both sides of the link: the Pro subscription or Business workspace, and the receiving API organization.
Both accounts must use the same email address.
For Business, workspace membership or an admin role alone is insufficient.
You need permission to manage API organization billing. A custom billing role alone does not replace organization ownership.
Plus is excluded. OpenAI’s documentation also does not establish Enterprise, Edu or legacy Codex seats as eligible for this offer.
Each eligible subscription or workspace can link to one API organization, and each API organization can have only one active subscription-benefit link. That prevents a team from assuming it can stack several separate Pro benefits into the same receiving organization.
Choose that organization carefully before confirming. Credits apply only there, so a request billed to another organization will not draw from the grant.
Plan eligibility is also different from successful issuance. The Help Center explicitly says:
“An eligible subscription does not itself confirm that a grant has been issued.”
The useful confirmation is a visible credit grant in the receiving API organization’s billing settings.
How to Claim Through ChatGPT or API Platform
OpenAI documents two activation routes. They link the same benefit, so you only need to complete one.
Claim Through ChatGPT
Sign in as the owner of the eligible Pro subscription, or select the eligible Business workspace as an owner.
For Pro, open Settings → Billing. For Business, open the workspace’s billing settings in ChatGPT or the Admin Console.
Find the API credits benefit and start the claim flow.
Review the receiving API organization. If multiple eligible organizations appear, select the intended one.
Check the displayed grant amount, then confirm activation.
Open that organization’s API Platform billing settings to verify the credits.
New API users can link to their Personal API Organization using the email associated with their eligible ChatGPT subscription. OpenAI says completing API onboarding first is unnecessary when claiming through ChatGPT.
Claim Through API Platform
Sign in to API Platform with the same email, select an organization you own, and open Billing. Find the API credits benefit, select the eligible subscription or Business workspace, review the offer and confirm.
After activation, use a project API key belonging to the linked organization. A ChatGPT Business seat does not automatically give its holder API organization or project access, so workspace owners may still need to arrange permissions separately.
Your First Grant May Be Much Smaller
The first grant is prorated for the time remaining in the current subscription billing cycle. Claiming a $200 Pro benefit near renewal therefore does not necessarily produce $200 immediately.
Monthly credits expire at the end of that subscription cycle, not one month after activation. Unused credits do not roll over. The renewal rules say subsequent grants arrive automatically when the eligible subscription renews, while the benefit remains available. You do not need to claim each month.
That timing makes the displayed amount and expiration date more useful than the headline allowance. A small first grant may simply reflect a short remaining billing period.
The economic value also depends on consumption. As an illustration, if a full-cycle $200 grant covers only $40 of eligible API usage before expiration, it offsets $40 of charges; the remaining $160 expires. The advertised allowance is a ceiling on covered usage, not guaranteed savings.
OpenAI says the benefit may change or be removed. Cancellation stops future grants once the subscription becomes ineligible, but cancellation alone does not revoke credits already issued; those remain usable until expiration.
What the Credits Cover, and What They Leave Separate
The developer documentation says credits cover eligible paid API Platform usage billed to the linked organization. Examples include:
Responses API requests for text, code and image understanding.
Image generation and editing.
Realtime voice interactions.
Agent workloads and OpenAI-hosted sandbox charges.
Built-in tools and associated usage or storage charges.
Codex usage through API keys is excluded. The credits also do not increase ChatGPT limits, signed-in Codex limits, personal usage-credit balances or Business workspace-credit balances. ChatGPT and API billing remain separate.
That distinction is especially important for coding subscribers: a Pro subscription’s API grant is not an extra Codex allowance, even though other supported API workloads involving code can qualify.
No API payment method is required while active free credits are available. API rate limits still apply, however; a funded balance does not remove organization or model limits.
OpenAI uses these free credits before purchased API credits. When the free balance runs out:
Remaining organization balance
Result
Purchased API credits remain
Usage continues against purchased credits
No credits remain
Requests fail with HTTP 429 and credit_balance_exhausted
For an application that needs continuous service, check both expiration and purchased balance. Auto Recharge is an available fallback, but it adds paid credits and can create additional spending.
On October 30, user @opus reported a missing claim option on a $200 Pro subscription purchased through Google Play, despite saying the subscription was older than seven days and the ownership and email requirements were met. @archerWang reported receiving a $7 grant on an Apple App Store subscription, followed by no new $200 grant after automatic renewal.
Those posts do not establish that store-billed subscriptions are generally excluded or identify a confirmed cause. Another participant, @IAmJackHarper, reported that a previously missing organization-link button appeared and credits were granted.
If activation is missing or the balance looks wrong, record the subscription tier, purchase channel, billing-cycle dates, organization and displayed grant status before seeking account-specific help. The published rules describe the intended behavior; a forum report cannot verify an individual account’s eligibility or billing state.
Frequently Asked Questions
3 questions
1
Must I Own Both Accounts?
Yes. You must own the eligible Pro subscription or Business workspace and the receiving API organization, using the same email address for both.
2
Do Unused Credits Roll Over?
No. Monthly grants expire at the end of the subscription billing cycle. Annually prepaid Business grants expire at the end of the annual cycle.
3
Can I Use These Credits for Codex?
They do not cover Codex usage through API keys and do not increase signed-in Codex allowances. They fund supported API Platform usage in the linked organization.
