Yelp’s new Check for Me feature can call a restaurant on a diner’s behalf, ask about the current wait, and text back the answer. For someone weighing dinner plans, that could mean finding out whether to expect a 10-minute wait or choose somewhere else.
Announced in Yelp’s fall 2026 product release on October 20, the feature is beginning an iOS rollout. Yelp says availability will expand over the coming months to eligible U.S. restaurants.
The same release adds OpenTable reservations and more personalized recommendations to Yelp Assistant, giving it more ways to act on dining suggestions. The announcement leaves several questions open: how reliably the phone agent works, what restaurant employees hear, and exactly when individual users will get access.
Tap, Enter Your Party Size, Then Wait for a Text
Yelp describes the Check for Me workflow in four steps:
- Open an eligible restaurant’s business page or find the feature through Yelp Assistant.
- Tap “Check wait time now.”
- Enter your party size and phone number.
- Let the AI agent call the restaurant, then receive the answer by text.
Yelp says the update should arrive “within minutes.” That describes the intended experience; it is not a published, independently measured response-time result.
Party size helps make the answer relevant to the visit. A restaurant’s estimate for two diners may differ from its estimate for a larger group, so the agent is meant to retrieve more than a generic indication of how busy the restaurant is. Because the answer arrives by text, the diner doesn’t have to remain in a live chat while the call takes place.

Checking the wait does not secure a table. Yelp describes reservations and joining a waitlist as separate actions. Check for Me supplies information to help someone decide where or when to go, without promising that a seat will be available when they arrive.
The iOS Rollout Has Important Limits
The Verge’s launch report describes Check for Me as “starting to roll out on iOS.” Yelp’s announcement gives a more specific scope: eligible restaurant business pages and Yelp Assistant, where walk-ins are possible, in the United States, with the rollout taking place over the coming months.
This is a phased introduction. Neither description establishes that every U.S. iPhone user can use the feature immediately, and neither establishes Android availability for Check for Me.
The sources also leave out a complete regional schedule, account-level eligibility rules, and a list of participating restaurants. A restaurant’s presence on Yelp alone does not mean the calling option will appear on its page.
To see whether you can try it, look for “Check wait time now” on an eligible restaurant page or in Yelp Assistant. If the control is missing, the announcement does not offer enough detail to tell whether that reflects account access, restaurant eligibility, or rollout timing. Access to the chatbot is only part of the requirement: the calling feature also needs an eligible destination and a supported real-world task.
OpenTable Adds Booking, Not Just Another Recommendation
Yelp is also adding an OpenTable integration to Yelp Assistant. The company says users can ask for restaurant recommendations or request a booking at a specific restaurant, then select a date, time, and party size within the Assistant on iOS.
OpenTable handles booking confirmation and reservation changes directly, so the conversational interface is only one of the systems involved in managing the reservation.
At eligible restaurants, users can also join Yelp Waitlist directly from the chat. Yelp says the Assistant will monitor their status and send updates when the table is ready.
Each capability serves a different dining decision:
- Check for Me asks about the current walk-in wait.
- OpenTable booking lets a user select an available reservation.
- Yelp Waitlist lets a user join the line at an eligible restaurant.
Those differences are more useful than grouping all three under the “agent” label. Someone deciding whether to leave home needs a current estimate. Planning a birthday dinner calls for a booking, while someone ready to eat at a particular restaurant may need a place in its queue.
Yelp Assistant can increasingly help carry out a decision after making a recommendation. The calling feature takes that a step further by reaching beyond information already displayed in the app to request an answer from the restaurant.
Personalization Is Arriving in Stages, Too
Updates rolling out to Yelp Assistant use previous Assistant conversations and review history to shape recommendations and follow-up prompts, according to the company.
Yelp’s example combines an interest in vegetarian restaurants with reviews of dog-friendly coffee shops to suggest places that accommodate both preferences.
Other inputs remain on the roadmap. The announcement says the Assistant will soon draw on previous Yelp searches, preferences, saved businesses, and other app activity for more personalized answers. Those additions are planned, not fully available at launch.
The release also introduces Keep Me Posted. Users can request scheduled recommendations or reminders, delivered through push and in-app notifications, and Yelp says they can revise or disable them through settings or by asking the Assistant.
Personalized suggestions could help users discover the calling and booking tools when they need them. Their quality still needs to be judged separately from the actions that follow. Remembering someone’s preference for vegetarian food does not establish that an agent can accurately retrieve a wait estimate or complete the right reservation.
