Anthropic renamed its Max 20x plan to Claude Ultra on October 30, 2026, keeping the price at $200 per month and migrating existing subscribers automatically.
The most significant change is the removal of the five-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts, though a weekly cap of 10 times Pro's allowance remains. Included monthly API credits double to $200 compared with the $100 Max tier, but those credits cover eligible Claude Platform API work only — not Claude Code or in-app usage.
Anthropic has renamed Max 20x to Claude Ultra, keeping the web subscription at $200 per month and moving existing Max 20x subscribers automatically. The October 30, 2026 change also removes the five-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts, giving heavy users more flexibility over when they consume their weekly allowance.
Ultra still has limits. Anthropic specifies 10 times Pro’s weekly usage, with an allowance that applies across models and a separate weekly limit for Fable. Verification happens automatically, while the included $200 in monthly Claude Platform API credits requires subscribers to link a Console organization. These details are documented in Anthropic’s Ultra help page and API-credit documentation.
The most consequential change is scheduling: verified subscribers can concentrate more work into a busy stretch without first exhausting a five-hour allowance. That flexibility can matter for coding agents and multi-step tasks, but it does not increase the weekly budget beyond the published cap.
What Changes With Claude Ultra
Existing Max 20x subscribers do not need to buy a replacement subscription. Anthropic says they move to Ultra automatically, with no price change. Ultra remains a monthly-only individual plan.
The current comparison is between Max, the $100 tier, and Ultra, the $200 tier. Max in this table means today’s Max plan, not the former Max 20x subscription.

The old “20x” name is no longer the useful number for planning. Anthropic now defines Ultra’s allowance as 10× Pro per week. The supplied documentation does not provide a like-for-like historical comparison that would justify treating the name change itself as a measured usage increase or reduction.
My view is that the clearest distinction between Max and Ultra is now the combination of weekly capacity and scheduling freedom. Ultra costs twice as much as Max, offers twice its published weekly allowance, and removes the shorter usage window once the account qualifies.
Removing the Five-Hour Limit Changes Usage Timing
Anthropic’s pricing page describes Max as having usage allowances every five hours and every week. Verified Ultra accounts retain the weekly allowance but lose the five-hour restriction.
That distinction matters because a short-window cap can interrupt concentrated work even when a subscriber still has weekly capacity available. Removing it allows more of that weekly capacity to be consumed during one intensive stretch, such as a large coding task or a sequence of document-processing jobs.
Consider a hypothetical subscriber who has a substantial weekly allowance left and needs to work through several code changes in one afternoon. Under a five-hour usage limit, the shorter allowance could become the immediate constraint. With verified Ultra, the weekly allowance becomes the main published usage constraint instead.
This is a change to usage pacing, not a promise of unlimited task runtime. A five-hour usage window should not be confused with a five-hour timer that necessarily terminates an individual job. Anthropic also explicitly says it does not guarantee uninterrupted service and may apply additional capacity controls. Those qualifications appear in the Ultra plan documentation.
I’d therefore plan demanding work around the weekly budget, while treating the removed session limit as useful breathing room. A task can still exhaust available usage; it simply has one fewer quota window to contend with on a verified account.
How to Check Whether Your Account Is Verified
Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using factors including account history and payment history. The stated purpose is fraud and abuse prevention.
Subscribers can check their status directly:
Open Claude’s Settings.
Select Usage.
Look for the Current session bar.
According to Anthropic, if the Current session bar is absent, the account is verified.
Unverified Ultra accounts keep a temporary usage limit until verification completes. Anthropic does not publish the verification timetable or quantify that temporary limit. It says the limit is removed automatically, so there is no separate verification action subscribers need to complete.
Phone verification at checkout is a different process. Completing it does not remove the temporary usage restriction, according to the same help page.
That makes the Usage screen a more useful check than the plan name alone. Being subscribed to Ultra does not, by itself, confirm that the account already has unrestricted pacing within its weekly allowance.
Weekly Limits Still Need Attention
Ultra’s weekly allowance applies across all models. Fable also has a separate weekly limit; Anthropic’s pricing comparison lists Fable at 50% of weekly limits on Max and Ultra.
The published multiplier is not a fixed promise of a particular number of messages, files or completed coding tasks. Anthropic says consumption depends on the model, chat length and file size. Two subscribers with the same plan can therefore reach their limits at different points in their work.
Model choice affects consumption: Different workloads can use the allowance at different rates.
Fable has an additional constraint: Its separate weekly cap still applies.
Other controls remain possible: Anthropic reserves the ability to impose additional model, feature, weekly or monthly limits.
For users doing occasional bursts of intensive work, removing the shorter window could be particularly valuable. For someone already exhausting the weekly allowance, the change mainly makes it possible to reach that same boundary sooner. That is the central tradeoff behind the new plan structure.
What the $200 in Monthly API Credits Covers
Ultra also includes $200 in Claude Platform API credits per billing cycle, compared with $100 on Max. These credits are a separate benefit from the usage available inside Claude and Claude Code.
Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry
The distinction is important for subscribers hoping the credit will extend a coding session. Anthropic states: “Credits don’t change your usage limits in Claude or Claude Code.”
The benefit instead supports applications and agents built through the Claude Platform. It is not a cash rebate, and unused credit expires at the end of each billing cycle without rolling over.
How to Claim the Credits
Subscribers must link an eligible Claude subscription to a Claude Console organization:
Open Claude in a web browser and go to Settings > Billing.
Find the API credits section.
Select the Console organization that should receive the credits.
Accept the program terms by linking it.
Check Promotional credits on the Console’s Billing page.
The subscription must be active and in good standing. New subscribers can claim credits after seven days on an eligible plan. Claiming also requires the appropriate Console organization role: Owner, Admin or Billing.
Choose the organization carefully. Each subscription can link to one Console organization, and each organization can receive credits from one plan. Subscribers cannot change that link themselves; a later change requires support.
A Claude Platform payment method is not required to claim the benefit. If the organization runs out of included credits and has no other credit balance, API requests stop until more credits become available. API usage is never charged to the Claude subscription.
How Much Value the Credits Actually Add
The $200 credit has the clearest value for someone who already expects to spend money on eligible API work. It can offset that consumption, subject to expiry and platform restrictions.
I would not subtract the full $200 from Ultra’s price when comparing plans unless that API spending was already planned. A subscriber who only uses Claude chat and subscription-based Claude Code cannot apply the credit to those workloads.
API spend caps and rate limits also continue to apply. Anthropic notes that organization spend caps reset on the first of the calendar month, while included credits refresh on the subscription’s billing cycle. Those schedules can differ, so a visible promotional balance does not override an organization’s spending controls.
For heavy users, the useful first steps are straightforward: check verification in Settings > Usage, plan around the weekly allowance, and link API credits only to the organization where eligible development work will happen.
