Two years ago, Google surprised the AI community with the release of Dreambooth, an AI-powered tool capable of generating 3D objects from simple text descriptions.

The promise of this technology was immense, yet the initial outcomes of my experiments resembled something straight out of a dystopian novel—think of a low-poly crab that barely met expectations.

‍

I was not impressed.

‍

Fast forward two years, and the landscape has drastically evolved. Luma Labs, a company focused on artificial intelligence, has unveiled Genie, a new text-to-3D tool that has the ability to produce high-quality 3D objects from text prompts.

For instance, the “low poly crab” generated by today’s Luma AI technology showcases a remarkable leap in quality and realism.

In this article, I will be talking about Luma AI’s Genie tool, guiding you on how to generate 3D models for free and download them for personal use.

Let’s get started.

What is Genie?

Genie is a text-to-3D AI tool that is currently in the research preview phase. This tool leverages a deep neural network to transform text inputs into 3D models.

The generated file is available to download in the following format:

*.fbx

*.obj

*.glb

*.usdz

*.blend

*.stl

The neural network has been trained on a large dataset of 3D shapes, textures, and scenes, making it a powerful and reliable tool for those who need to generate 3D models quickly and easily.

How to Generate 3D objects?

To start creating, visit the Luma AI Discord server and navigate to one of the five “genie” channels.

In the chat box, type the keyword /genie to bring up the prompt box and describe the 3D object you want to generate. For example, I wanted to generate a 3D model of a cute Shiba Inu in a nurse costume.

Prompt: A cute shiba inu wearing a nurse costume.

The AI will initially generate four variations in preview mode. In order to actually generate the 3D model, you need to select one of the four preview images and click on one of the “Refine” buttons.

This process is going to take a couple of minutes to complete. This Shiba Inu model took ~10 minutes to generate.

That looks so adorable and impressively high-quality.

You can also generate variations of the preview image by selecting one of the four variation buttons.

How to Download for FREE

The best thing about Luma AI’s 3D object generator is that it offers a free download of all publicly generated 3D models.

Simply open the 3D model you like on their website, and on the lower right corner, select the file format that works with your 3D program, and click on the download button.

This feature is a boon for 3D artists, providing easy access to a diverse range of 3D models.

Here are some of my favorites

The community’s creative output is endlessly fascinating. Here are a few standout 3D models that caught my eye:

Final Thoughts

I was really impressed and felt really excited the first time I created a 3D model with Luma Labs. The fact that such an advanced service is available for free (albeit temporarily) is nothing short of incredible. While this won’t last forever, it’s definitely worth exploring while it’s still free.
