After ten months of silence, OpenAI has finally released Dall-E3, the latest version of its popular AI image generator. Dall-E3 is said to be a significant improvement with more nuance and details over Dall-E2.

What’s new in Dall-E3?

  • Better image quality and coherence than Dall-E2
  • Dall-E3 can generate legible text
  • Dall-E3 works inside ChatGPT
  • Improved safety

To better illustrate the difference, take a look at the example below. The two images used the same prompt:

Prompt: A paper craft art depicting a girl giving her cat a gentle hug. Both sit amidst potted plants, with the cat purring contentedly while the girl smiles. The scene is adorned with handcrafted paper flowers and leaves.

This example shows Dall-E3’s ability to understand and generate complex concepts. Among other things, I noticed the girl in the right image is neither smiling nor hugging the cat.

Dall-E3 can generate text

Another significant update is the ability to spell words correctly and legibly. For example, you could use Dall-E3 to generate a vintage travel poster:

Prompt: A vintage travel poster for Venus in portrait orientation. The scene portrays the thick, yellowish clouds of Venus with a silhouette of a vintage rocket ship approaching. Mysterious shapes hint at mountains and valleys below the clouds. The bottom text reads, ‘Explore Venus: Beauty Behind the Mist’. The color scheme consists of golds, yellows, and soft oranges, evoking a sense of wonder.

I love how the AI deliberately chose the font and colors to match the overall aesthetics of the poster. That’s something no other AI tool is capable of.

Dall-E3 is integrated in ChatGPT

Starting in October 2023, ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to use Dall-E 3 natively within ChatGPT. This means that you can use ChatGPT to generate or refine prompts for Dall-E 3, simply by asking it what you want to see.

ChatGPT Plus also gives you access to the latest language model, GPT-4, and ChatGPT plugins. It is currently priced at $20 per month.

It will also roll out on OpenAI Labs later this fall.

You can sell your images

The images you create with Dall-E 3 are yours to use, reprint, sell, or merchandise.

Subject to the Content Policy and Terms, you own the images you create with DALL·E, including the right to reprint, sell, and merchandise — regardless of whether an image was generated through a free or paid credit.

Isn’t that cool? Making money with minimal effort.

These are some of the platforms where you can make money from AI generated images:

Is it better than MidJourney?

MidJourney AI has long been considered the best AI image generator. However, the quality of images generated by Dall-E 3 is comparable, and the two tools are now in close competition.

Let’s do a comparison with this prompt:

Prompt: A vibrant yellow banana-shaped couch sits in a cozy living room, its curve cradling a pile of colorful cushions. on the wooden floor, a patterned rug adds a touch of eclectic charm, and a potted plant sits in the corner, reaching towards the sunlight filtering through the window.

Artists can ask to remove their work from the training dataset

If you are a creator with a high volume of images from specific URLs, you can now opt their images out of the training of our future image generation models.

It should be noted that DALL-E3 does pose moral issues, as do many AI models. There are worries about potential misuse, producing unsuitable or dangerous content, and problems with copyright and intellectual property.

Final Thoughts

Dall-E3 is not yet publicly available, but the early previews of its results are incredibly impressive. If it proves to be better than MidJourney, I’d be willing to cancel my MidJourney subscription and use Dall-E3 on ChatGPT.

On Tuesday, Google released a new version of its chatbot, Bard, which connects with several of the company’s most popular services. In the article I wrote about the Bard update, I said that the extensions could surge Bard ahead in the ongoing AI race.

It is too early to say definitively which AI chatbot is better, Bard or ChatGPT. However, the integration of Dall-E3 gives ChatGPT a significant edge in terms of versatility and power.
